Enlisted at the ripe age of 19 for marine service, Gerald Hobson has had a less than sterling career. Although he excelled at physical excercises and close combat, his abilities as a marksman were limited and his discipline lacking. However, he displayed a remarkable talent for motivating the men around him, and has received citations for bravery and leadership under fire. He rise through the ranks has been slow. In fact, Hobson lost his first Private First Class stripe after being charged with conduct unbecoming of a marine after an incident involving a bar maid, heavy drink, and a Lieutenant in civilian clothing.
Corporal Hobson has had no family members in living memory that have served in the armed forces. In fact, he is the first member of his family to graduate from an institute of higher learning. Born on a remote colony, his family has struggled to survive on what little food they could produce on the planet's thin surface soil. Determined not to be "stuck on that damn dustball" for the remainder of his life, Hobson enlisted the first chance he could through one of the few starfleet ships that visited the colony annually.
